Children’s Nightwear Standard for New Zealand
Product Safety Standards (Children’s Nightwear & Limited Daywear Having Reduced Fire Hazard) Regulations 2008 declare AS/NZS 1249:2003 Children’s nightwear and limited daywear having reduced fire hazard (with variations as modified by Amendment A 2008) to be a product safety standard. The regulations set out what types of children’s wear must carry labelling and what parts of the standard apply to New Zealand.
The standard sets out the labelling specifications that all children’s nightwear (from size 00 - 14) must meet and the tests, which have to be carried out to determine the fire hazard categories for children’s nightwear. The fire danger labels must be in the correct colours and must follow the exact wording set out in the standard.
The standard creates four categories of acceptable garments for nightwear and establishes burn tests for each category. For category 1 garments must have a white label stating "LOW FIRE DANGER". For categories 2 and 3 garments must have an orange label stating "CAUTION NOT HEAT OR FLAME RESISTANT - WEAR SNUG-FITTING TO REDUCE RISK". For category 4 garments must have a red label with a fire emblem, stating "WARNING - HIGH FIRE DANGER - KEEP WAY FROM FIRE". The standard also sets out design / dimension specifications for categories 2, 3 and 4.
It is important for suppliers to accurately determine the correct category and fire hazard label for their garments. Testing garments for compliance with the mandatory standard may be the only way to do this.
