Children’s Jewelry Safety Standard ASTM F2923-20 Published

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) published in March 2020 the standard ASTM F2923-20, Consumer Safety Specification for Children Jewelry, prepared by its Committee (F15) on Consumer Products, Subcommittee (F15.24) on Jewelry.

Compared to its previous version ASTM F2923-14, the main changes are as below:

(1) Physical requirements remain unchanged.

(2) Update total cadmium content requirement from 300 ppm to 75ppm.

(3) Add phthalate requirement for plasticized accessible components of children’s jewelry: shall not contain more than 0.1 percent (1000 ppm) of the following phthalates:

  • Di-(2-ethyhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP)
  • Diisononyl phthalate (DINP)
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)
  • Di-n-pentyl phthalate (DPENP)
  • Di-n-hexyl phthalate (DHEXP)
  • Dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP)

(4) Related chemical test methods changed to updated version:

  • a. Update method ASTM F963-11 to ASTM F963 (Current latest version: ASTM F963-17).
  • b. Add method CPSC-CH-E1001-08.3 besides previous CPSC-CH-E1001-08.
  • c. Add method CPSC-CH-E1002-08.3 besides previous CPSC-CH-E1002-08.
  • d. Update method EN 1811:2011 to EN 1811:2011+A1:2015.

(5) Not allow to use alternative chemical test method not stated in standard.
