The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has proposed a new safety standard for crib mattresses (16 CFR 1241). The safety standard shall apply to full-size crib mattresses, non-full-size crib mattresses, and after-market mattresses for play yards and non-full-size cribs.
Crib mattresses shall comply with ASTM F2933-19 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Crib Mattresses, with modifications in various parts:
Physical requirements

Section 5.7.1.1: When the mattress is placed against the perimeter and in the corner of the crib, the corner gap shall not exceed 1.75 in (44.5 mm).

Section 5.7.2: Mattresses supplied with a non-full-size crib shall meet the specifications of “mattresses for rigid sided products” in ASTM F406. After-market mattresses for non-full-size cribs shall be treated in the same way as mattresses supplied with a non-full-size crib.

Section 5.10: Crib mattresses shall have certain firmness when tested.

Section 5.11: Any coil springs or metal wires shall not be exposed when tested.
Marking and labelling requirements

Section 7.1: The name, place of business and telephone number of the manufacturer, distributor or seller, and identification of the manufacturing date shall be provided.

Section 7.4: The warning design for mattresses shall follow the modified provisions.

Sections 7.5, 7.6 and 7.7: The warning statements shall meet the modified specifications. Examples of the warning labels are shown in Fig. 1-3 below.

Section 7.8: Warning statements labelled on the mattresses shall be repeated on the retail package, unless they are visible entirely through the retail package.

Instructional literature

A new Section 8 on instructional literature shall be added to the safety standard.

Instructions shall be provided with the mattresses, including information on assembly, maintenance, cleaning and use, where applicable.

All warnings stated on the mattresses shall be included in the instructional literature in a specific manner.
Note:

Size of full-size crib: 52 3?8 ± 5?8 in. (1330 ± 16 mm); width 28 ± 5?8 in. (711 ± 16 mm).

Size of non-full-size crib: Interior length dimension either greater than 55 in. (1397 mm) or smaller than 49 3?4 in. (1264 mm) or an interior width dimension either greater than 30 5?8 in. (778 mm) or smaller than 25 3?8 in. (645 mm) or both.

“After-market mattress for play yard or non-full-size crib” means a mattress sold or distributed for a play yard or non-full-sized crib.
