On July 2022, the European Union published a new version of sunglasses testing requirement EN ISO 12312-1 to 2022 version.

Transitional period:

It will eventually supersede EN ISO 12312-1:2013 + A1:2015 version at the latest by January 2023.

Regulation requirement:

The harmonized standard of PPE regulation EU 2016/425 for sunglass was still EN ISO 12312-1:2013/A1:2015. The new standard EN ISO 12312-1:2022 currently was not published in the Official Journal. Please continue to pay attention to us for any updated news for the regulation.

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

1. Added a specification for the electro-optical filters;
2. Replacement of the checking method for local refractive power variations with one that involves observation of a regular grid image through a lens (ISO 18526-1: 2020 clause 6.3);
3. Introduced the activation of photochromic lenses at 5 and 35C as optional information;
4. Extended the side protection to children’s sunglasses mounting filter category 4 lenses;
5. The introduction of seven headforms in accordance with ISO 18526-4: 2020, three type 1 and three type 2 plus a children’s headform. Each type is in three sizes - small, medium and large. For sunglasses, the use of these test headforms generally involves a different interpupillary distance. For instance, type 1 has 60, 64, 68 mm interpupillary distances;
6. Update of the uniformity requirement of light transmission requirement inside the single ocular region by reducing the survey area to a 30mm diameter and simultaneously increasing the regulatory limit to 15% (the 20% limit for category 4 filters remains unchanged).

Test capacity:
