Standard Update on UL 982, 7th Ed. Rev. Jun. 24, 2015 Electric Household Cooking and Food Serving Appliances

Based on UL 982, 6th Ed. Rev. Jun. 09, 2010,UL has updated this standard on June 2015. The requirement becomes effective right now.

Summary of update:

1. Added the requirement for batteries.

a) Lithium ion single cell shall comply with UL 1642;

Lithium ion multiple cell batteries or lithium ion battery packs shall comply with UL 2054;

b) Rechargeable Ni-Cad cells and battery packs shall comply with this end product standard;

c) Rechargeable Ni-MH cells and packs shall comply with this end-product standard or UL 2054.

2. Added the new requirements for control acting as operating control.

2.1) Operating controls shall comply with UL 244A, or UL 873, or 60730 series;

2.2) A control limiting the operating time during normal operation, starting or stopping the motor, and any control required for compliance with this standard during normal operation of the appliance shall be evaluated as an operating control.

Exception: An electronic control starting or stopping the motor shall be evaluated as an auxiliary control if:

a) The appliance has no accessible moving parts during normal operation likely to cause injury;

b) The electronic control is placing the appliance in stand-by mode, where a single malfunction of a component can cause unexpected operation, shall be provided with a motor control OFF switch and be constructed with a light which flashes only when the appliance is in the stand-by mode.; or

c) Malfunction or breakdown of a component does not result in loss of OFF control or unexpected operation of the motor.

3. Added the requirements for control acting as protective control.

3.1 Electronic protective controls relying upon software shall comply with UL1998 or UL 60730 series (including software evaluation);

3.2 Electronic protective controls not relying upon software shall comply with UL 991 or UL 60730 series (except software evaluation).

NOTE: An electronic control acting as an interlock, or Motor Protection, or limiting the operating time under abnormal required for compliance with this standard, shall be evaluated as a protective control.

4. Added the wiring flexing test for internal wiring subject to movement during operation.

The required cycles are 6000.

As a result of the test, there shall be no electrical failure or mechanical failure, and the appliance shall comply with Dielectric Voltage-withstand Test.

5. Added criteria for determining whether an interlock can be defeated by the accumulation of food materials.

The interlock mechanisms shall not be located:

a) Within the food processing area;

b) On surfaces over which food materials may be poured when emptying food materials from the food processing area; or

c) On surfaces which are subjected to spillage or leakage of food materials.

6. Revised the requirement of cutter stopping time and cover/guard misalignment for interlock system.

6.1 In New Standard: The below requirements shall be applied for all products:

a) When the cover or guard is removed, the moving parts shall stop within 4 s.
Exception: A centrifugal juicer shall not be subjected to this test.

b) If the cover or guard can actuate the interlock switch without being properly locked in place, any access opening to moving parts that can be created by the misalignment shall have a maximum vertical dimension of not more than 25.4 mm between the bowl and cover.

6.2 In old standard: The items a) and b) only applied to Coffee mill, Food processor, Food chopper.

7. Revised the cycles of endurance for interlock system.

Product New standard Old standard
Centrifugal juicers 6,000 cycles 6,000 cycles
Coffee mill 6,000 cycles 6,000 cycles
Pasta mixer-extruder 6,000 cycles 6,000 cycles
Food processor 10,000 cycles 10,000 cycles
Food choppers 10,000 cycles 10,000 cycles
Other products that interlock system required for this standard 10,000 cycles --

8. Revised the PLC (of HAI) requirement for portable appliances with polymeric material enclosure.

a) The requirements of the old standard:
The spacing between the polymeric enclosure and an arcing part shall not be less than 12.7 mm, but the spacing may be less than 12.7 mm and not less than 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) if the HAI of the polymeric material is 1 or 0.

b) The requirements of the new standard:
Revised the PLC of HAI to:

Material Flame Class HAI
HB 1
V-2 2
V-1 3
V-0 4

9. Added two additional exemptions for Blender Cover Opening Splash Test.

If a blender provided with an opening in the cover located near the edge of the cover and intended for pouring, shall not present a risk of burn injury when blending hot liquids. Complies is by conducting the Blender Cover Opening Splash Test.

a) The new exemption 1:

The Blender Cover Opening Splash Test is not conducted if:

  • The container or cover shall be marked “Caution – Do Not Blend Hot Liquids”.
  • “Caution – Do Not Blend Hot Liquids” also shall be in the instructions.

b) The new exemption 2:

If the cover is provided with a vented lid intended to remain in place over the cover opening when blending hot liquids, the blender shall be:

  • The lid or cap shall be marked to indicate that it shall remain in place when blending hot liquids.
  • The warning of item 1 also shall be in the instructions.
  • Subjected to the Blender Vented Lid Test, if the sum of the cross sectional areas of the vent is less than 0.785 in2 (506 mm2), and
  • Subjected to the Blender Cover Opening Splash Test, with the vented lid in place.

10. Added new requirement for all operational test.

If the appliance has a rated voltage range including voltages outside of the range specified in below Table, tests shall be repeated at the maximum and minimum rated voltages unless it is determined that the change in test voltage will not adversely affect the results.

Rated voltage (V) Test voltage (V)
110-120 120

11. Added new requirement of power input and temperature for grain mill/grinder.

11.1 Power input:

The input test shall be conducted while the grain mill is processing various grains, including wheat, rice, corn or other grains recommended in the instruction manual, for each type of grinding provided to determine the load resulting in the highest input.

11.2 Normal temperature test:

The normal temperature test shall be conducted while processing the type of grain resulting in the highest inputs at the grinding setting that resulted in the highest input until a total of 0.45 kg of grain has been processed.

12. Added non-metallic enclosure fasteners test for portable appliances with polymeric material enclosure.

13. Added new requirements for Direct Plug-In Rechargeable Appliance.
