Consumer (household) products containing lithium button cells Standard UL4200A update introduction
Recently, in some ANSI/UL standards (such as UL1082, UL982, UL1026, UL1081, etc.), a new requirement of UL4200A has been added for products that incorporate or may use button or coin batteries of lithium technologies.
The effective date, please refer to the Standards Update Notice for each end product standard.
1. Applicable Products: For consumer (household) products are intended for use with lithium cell(s), the cell having a diameter of 32 mm maximum and with a diameter greater than its height (but in some end-product standards, may have additional exceptions).
2. The purposes (but not limited to): To minimize the risk of children removing and ingesting or aspirating the batteries.
3. Construction
3.1 Product that allow user to remove or replace the cell(s) shall comply with:
3.1.1 The product shall not allow the cell to be contacted by Test Probe 11 of IEC 61032, during the examination, part of the enclosure that may be opened or removed by the user, either without using a tool or with less effort than two independent and simultaneous movements by hand, is to be opened or removed.
3.1.2 Product shall be designed to prevent children from removing the battery by (a) or (b):
a) A tool, such as a screwdriver or coin, is required to open the battery compartment; or
b) The battery compartment door or cover requires the application of a minimum of two independent and simultaneous movements to open by hand.
3.1.3 If screws or similar fasteners are used to secure the door or cover providing access to a battery compartment, the fasteners shall be captive to the door, cover, or device.
3.2 Product that is not intended for user removal or replacement shall effectively prevent removal of the battery by the user or children. The cell shall be:
3.2.1 Made inaccessible by an enclosure or similar means; or
3.2.2 Held fully captive by the use of soldering, fasteners such as rivets, or equivalent means.
4. Performance
4.1 Abuse tests:
a) Three drops test for portable device, ten drops for hand-held product. Drop from a height of 1.0 m onto a horizontal hardwood surface.
b) The enclosure or battery compartment door/cover shall be subject to three, 2J impacts test.
c) A crushing force of 330N is applied for 10 s to the exposed surfaces. The force is to be applied by a flat surface measuring approximately 100 by 250 mm.
d) After the tests a) to c), a force of 45N is for 10 s to the compartment door/cover or enclosure by a Test Probe 11 of IEC 61032. The battery compartment door/cover shall not open and shall remain functional. The battery shall not be accessible.
4.2 Secureness test: cell(s) that are not intended for user removal or replacement, and are accessible. Checked by a test hook, with a force of 20N applied for 10 s, directed outwards, the cell(s) shall not become separated.
